Day One Hundred Ninety (Year Six)

Well, I got a few of the goals on my list from last night crossed off today, and I didn't spend nearly as much time in the studio as I had hoped to at the start of the day.

The biggest goal on that list was getting things streamlined a little bit in the studio, and while I didn't get all of the excess stuff put away quite yet, I have it off to the side enough that things are looking a whole lot better for progress heading into the last day of January and the start of February.

I fit in a bit of listening today, but am saving the other two items on the list for tomorrow.  The Mrs. has a paper due tomorrow night for school, so I should have a decent amount of time tomorrow to get into the studio and work on both original songs/recording projects, and the lessons that have been out there this week.

The other thing I finally got around to doing today was small, but it has been on my list since I saw my brother a month ago.  I went out today and picked up an ink pad, so I'm actually able to make use of the chord & tab stamps he got me for Christmas.  This is going to help nudge my soloing forward, in that it will be easier for me to transcribe the bits I need to look at more closely.  Silly, I know, but it will be good to have going forward.

Can't wait for tomorrow!

Day Three

Short one today. I've got a bunch of the DVDs that Guitar World has put out. Waded through those to see what I had, worked off of the lead guitar one. Just basic scales , but still a light place to begin. It was nice to just start loosening up my fingers again. Off from work tomorrow, so hopefully I'll get a lot of playing done. Said I'd mention the other project I'm hoping to finish this year. Back when I was living in WI, I started a hard rock band with a friend of mine. She was heavily influenced by Evanescence, and so, with her as vocalist, we started writing songs. We had written and demoed almost a full album's worth of music by the time I moved to IA, and had even purchased a P.A. in preparation for eventual gigs. We never did find a permanent drummer or bassist, so our demos sound very rough (and not nearly loud enough). I'd like to finish those songs, and make an EP of the 4 or 5 strongest, just as a way to put a cap on that project. More tom...

Day Three Hundred Fifty Seven (Year Seven)

Today was okay.  It ended up being quieter than I wanted it to be, but I got in a few things. 1.  I got the music from the car hauled in and sorted out in advance of my road trip to Dubuque for a little longer than a day.  I'm taking the Radiohead reissue with me for that, since I haven't gotten a chance to sit down with it yet. 2.  I'm also taking an empty notebook along with me, in the hopes that I might start to get some lyric ideas down on paper while I'm gone.  I watched some cool videos early this morning about the idea of writing all of the music before writing lyrics, and the way things are going that is looking like what's going on with me. 3.  I wish there had been more playing today, but I'm still feeling good about where things are sitting.  This next week needs to include a lot of writing.

Day One Hundred Forty Two

So, I haven't been sleeping much lately, and I've been staying up late. listening to music, doing a bit of playing, and watching old episodes of Behind The Music on the internet. It's funny, you know, because I never met the rest of my "band," I've become the critic. It's all right, don't get me wrong, but for a decade now I've always hoped that I'd find a way to release something. It'll happen, I know it will, but it's continually happened slower than I expected it to. I've gotten close to getting something released, as I've documented before here before, but with the winter coming and the cold closing in, I'm facing another chance to make something musical of the winter. I'm going to start by finishing up the old things that have gotten pushed to the sides in the last few months. With the buildup of everything since the summer, it should be easier. Even if all I do is spend the winter writing lyrics, trying to g...
