Day Two Hundred Forty Seven (Year Three)

Did some more listening to that Kacey Musgraves record this afternoon while I was doing a few things around the house.  Her song, "Merry Go 'Round" is #1 on country radio right now, and it's easy to see why.  It's a catchy morality tale, with a lyric that ends up familiar after only a couple of listens.  Some of that rests in the fact that the song makes use of clever turns on colloquial phrases.

Sat with a guitar for a bit this afternoon, too.  It was an unplugged electric as opposed to an acoustic, but the effect was still the same.  I still worked through the couple of chords I've managed to string together.  I've got the progression as two guitar parts, and I added another chord or two based on the progression that's capoed up the neck.  Regardless of how close I appear to be on this one, it feels like the whole progression is a good few minutes work from having things fall into place.

What I didn't get to today was re-working a song in a different key from the original version.  I'm thinking I might have to make that a weekend project.  Gotta find the right song to start with.

Having this afternoon off means that the next couple of days will be long ones, but there will be music spread out during them, and therefore I will make it through.

Hopefully more music writing as the weekend approaches.

Day One Hundred Forty Two

So, I haven't been sleeping much lately, and I've been staying up late. listening to music, doing a bit of playing, and watching old episodes of Behind The Music on the internet. It's funny, you know, because I never met the rest of my "band," I've become the critic. It's all right, don't get me wrong, but for a decade now I've always hoped that I'd find a way to release something. It'll happen, I know it will, but it's continually happened slower than I expected it to. I've gotten close to getting something released, as I've documented before here before, but with the winter coming and the cold closing in, I'm facing another chance to make something musical of the winter. I'm going to start by finishing up the old things that have gotten pushed to the sides in the last few months. With the buildup of everything since the summer, it should be easier. Even if all I do is spend the winter writing lyrics, trying to g...

DayOne Hundred Sixty Nine (Year Eight)

Today was another good day.  I spent all of it with my brother, which I needed a lot, even though I just saw him over Christmas. Tonight we finally got around to some music discussion.  He took a look at my list of goals for the year, and sees it as a really good set of steps to get me where I'd like to be from where I am.  I picked his brain about a few of the nagging questions I still had as I get started, and he was able to put my mind at ease. Having a chance to sit and chat with him is always good for my musical soul, because he constantly drives me to be a better, more well rounded player, and I'm pretty sure that I can never thank him enough for all of the advice, support, and encouragement he offers every time we chat.

Day Ninety Three (Year Six)

Today was an interesting day. On one hand, it wasn't a day where I spent a ton of time in the studio, but on the other hand, it was a day where the time that I did spend in the studio was probably the most productive time I've had in a long time.  In short, even though I didn't spend all that much time working on the EP tonight, I feel like I got a whole lot closer to finishing it. I've been frustrated with myself lately for not finishing things a bit quicker, and struggling with the fact that, while I have been successful at finding a whole lot of kernels of songs, they haven't seemed to want to sprout into completed works.  Tonight, instead of freaking out and making myself more stressed out, I sat down and looked at a few favorite songs to see if I could sneak a peek behind the veil, if you will. The answers jumped out at me immediately.  I haven't been doing enough with the kernels.  Mostly, I haven't been facilitating the chord changes that will a...
