Finally had a chance to listen to the Airborne EP tonight. It's nineteen minutes of everything you love about rock and roll. It's atmospheric, propulsive, wistful, and it leaves me wanting more. I get that the songs are all on the full length that's coming later in the year. I get that I'll buy all of the songs again whenever the record actually comes out, and I don't care. I loved every second of it. I needed every second of it.
On the surface, the two records I focused on tonight, The Secret and Satellite Rides by the Old 97's, couldn't be more different. One is quintessential alt. country, the other is a short burst of rock and roll energy, and yet, on another level, both have large doses of excellent songwriting, sharp musicianship, and a decidedly pop underpinning that brings them both together in their own way.
Had a few thoughts dawn on me today regarding one of the unfinished songs-in-a-month today, too. Haven't had a chance to really test them out yet, though. Hopefully tomorrow at some point there will be an opening for that. We shall see.
Farther on the Grohl today, too.
Good day. More tomorrow. And better.
