Well, family got here tonight after I got off of work. Okay, so it's great to have my dad and step-mom here, but the real highlight for me is that my brother is here for the weekend. He's the only person I know who can take one of my three chord partial songs and single-handedly turn it into a key-modulating, three octave piece of music. Not so awesome for inclusion on the power pop/rock record I hope to have at year's end, but astoundingly impressive in its own right.
His theory knowledge puts me to absolute shame, but hanging out with him and talking music always makes me want to be a smarter studier, a better learner, a better musician.
He's got some jazz theory behind him, and some college courses in music theory that taught him how to analyze on an academic (and subsequently professional) level.
That, and he shreds like crazy on guitar. So much so that it always floors me that he went to school for oboe.
Listening to him play reminds me that I need to put in more hours in 2013. A lot more hours. That practice journal is going to get some serious work in the very near future.
