Day Three Hundred Fifty Nine

Talked to both J. and B. today.

J. and I finally had in month-in-the-making guide track discussion, and now it all makes sense to me.  The initial guide tracks need a strum on each of the changes, in time with the song, so that we make sure the drums and bass are falling in the right places.  A secondary guide track (should one be needed) would simply be another bed of sound that could potentially be used to fill in holes.  I hooked him up with the chords for the first song we've been working on, because all of his bass notes were wrong.  He dropped in the first guide track, just to give me an idea of what he's looking for, and then turned the volume way down on it, and pronounced the track ready for actual recording.  My job this week is to knock out the guide(s) for the next song.  I told him of the plan to have all of the songs finished & arrangements done by the time I get back from vacation.  He agrees with the plan, because if that happens, then as soon as I get back, everything will be full speed ahead.

As for the chat with B., it was fairly quick.  I re-hashed what J. and I talked about, and we talked about the tracks that J. left in the dropbox.  B. was excited and wanting to record vocals over the backing track, but then decided that she wanted an acoustic part to sing over, so I'll have to drop that in this week.  She's going to be away this weekend, so hopefully I can have a lot of stuff to send her by the time she gets back into town.  Who knows, maybe we can get some songs finished before I go home.

As for me tonight, I finished the Keith Richards bio right after work, and have been playing around with the music since talking with J.  I started playing around with the chord progressions for the song he needs guide tracks for, and then stopped to figure out the structure for the song, because just throwing myself into the mix on it didn't work.  B. texted in the middle of that, so I'll go back to it before going to bed.

Never did get up early this morning.  Going to try again tomorrow.

Day Three

Short one today. I've got a bunch of the DVDs that Guitar World has put out. Waded through those to see what I had, worked off of the lead guitar one. Just basic scales , but still a light place to begin. It was nice to just start loosening up my fingers again. Off from work tomorrow, so hopefully I'll get a lot of playing done. Said I'd mention the other project I'm hoping to finish this year. Back when I was living in WI, I started a hard rock band with a friend of mine. She was heavily influenced by Evanescence, and so, with her as vocalist, we started writing songs. We had written and demoed almost a full album's worth of music by the time I moved to IA, and had even purchased a P.A. in preparation for eventual gigs. We never did find a permanent drummer or bassist, so our demos sound very rough (and not nearly loud enough). I'd like to finish those songs, and make an EP of the 4 or 5 strongest, just as a way to put a cap on that project. More tom...

Day Three Hundred Fifty Seven (Year Seven)

Today was okay.  It ended up being quieter than I wanted it to be, but I got in a few things. 1.  I got the music from the car hauled in and sorted out in advance of my road trip to Dubuque for a little longer than a day.  I'm taking the Radiohead reissue with me for that, since I haven't gotten a chance to sit down with it yet. 2.  I'm also taking an empty notebook along with me, in the hopes that I might start to get some lyric ideas down on paper while I'm gone.  I watched some cool videos early this morning about the idea of writing all of the music before writing lyrics, and the way things are going that is looking like what's going on with me. 3.  I wish there had been more playing today, but I'm still feeling good about where things are sitting.  This next week needs to include a lot of writing.

Day One Hundred Forty Two

So, I haven't been sleeping much lately, and I've been staying up late. listening to music, doing a bit of playing, and watching old episodes of Behind The Music on the internet. It's funny, you know, because I never met the rest of my "band," I've become the critic. It's all right, don't get me wrong, but for a decade now I've always hoped that I'd find a way to release something. It'll happen, I know it will, but it's continually happened slower than I expected it to. I've gotten close to getting something released, as I've documented before here before, but with the winter coming and the cold closing in, I'm facing another chance to make something musical of the winter. I'm going to start by finishing up the old things that have gotten pushed to the sides in the last few months. With the buildup of everything since the summer, it should be easier. Even if all I do is spend the winter writing lyrics, trying to g...
