Day Three Hundred Fifty Six (Year Six)

So, today was fun.  To explain my day the right way involves two quick stories; the first of which happened two days ago, and the second of which happened five months ago, right before life started to get really crazy.

Two days ago, I wrote in this space about how things finally felt like they were moving forward.  I had sorted through tracks for an EP that I desperately need to finish by the end of the year, and I had mentioned the idea that, at some point this week, I'd like to go through the songs/ideas for the power pop record I've been harboring for far too long.

It's the power pop record that takes me back to February, when I attempted (and somewhat successfully completed) the February Album Writing Month project.  Basically, you write an albums worth of songs in 28 or 29 days, because why the hell not?  I had told myself that this was going to be the time that I finally put down the ideas that had been amassing in my head for that record.  And, at least somewhat, I did.  I finished some of the songs, others were half finished, and a couple were roughly sketched out.  They all had titles, but they weren't all the way written.  That's why, along with the EP, the "Power Pop Record" remained on my list of things to finish in 2016.

Tonight was, I decided, the night to go back and do the listening, the looking at my notes, etc.  I was fully prepared to cringe at what was there, shake my head, and scrap the whole lot of it.  Instead, I was surprised to find that I really liked what I heard.  The playing is rough around the edges, because I was more concerned with getting the ideas recorded than getting them perfect, and there are places where tempos lag that should be faster, but the ideas, the bones of it, are there, and they are good.  It seems that there's a record  there after all, I just have to finish it.

Day One Hundred Forty Two

So, I haven't been sleeping much lately, and I've been staying up late. listening to music, doing a bit of playing, and watching old episodes of Behind The Music on the internet. It's funny, you know, because I never met the rest of my "band," I've become the critic. It's all right, don't get me wrong, but for a decade now I've always hoped that I'd find a way to release something. It'll happen, I know it will, but it's continually happened slower than I expected it to. I've gotten close to getting something released, as I've documented before here before, but with the winter coming and the cold closing in, I'm facing another chance to make something musical of the winter. I'm going to start by finishing up the old things that have gotten pushed to the sides in the last few months. With the buildup of everything since the summer, it should be easier. Even if all I do is spend the winter writing lyrics, trying to g...

DayOne Hundred Sixty Nine (Year Eight)

Today was another good day.  I spent all of it with my brother, which I needed a lot, even though I just saw him over Christmas. Tonight we finally got around to some music discussion.  He took a look at my list of goals for the year, and sees it as a really good set of steps to get me where I'd like to be from where I am.  I picked his brain about a few of the nagging questions I still had as I get started, and he was able to put my mind at ease. Having a chance to sit and chat with him is always good for my musical soul, because he constantly drives me to be a better, more well rounded player, and I'm pretty sure that I can never thank him enough for all of the advice, support, and encouragement he offers every time we chat.

Day Ninety Three (Year Six)

Today was an interesting day. On one hand, it wasn't a day where I spent a ton of time in the studio, but on the other hand, it was a day where the time that I did spend in the studio was probably the most productive time I've had in a long time.  In short, even though I didn't spend all that much time working on the EP tonight, I feel like I got a whole lot closer to finishing it. I've been frustrated with myself lately for not finishing things a bit quicker, and struggling with the fact that, while I have been successful at finding a whole lot of kernels of songs, they haven't seemed to want to sprout into completed works.  Tonight, instead of freaking out and making myself more stressed out, I sat down and looked at a few favorite songs to see if I could sneak a peek behind the veil, if you will. The answers jumped out at me immediately.  I haven't been doing enough with the kernels.  Mostly, I haven't been facilitating the chord changes that will a...
