Day Three Hundred Thirty (Year Four)

Tonight felt productive in the studio.

I started where my brother and I had left off in our discussions on Tuesday night, taking the time and starting to go through the lesson on classical harmony from this year's February issue of Guitar Techniques.  It's always good to talk about theory with my brother, and listening to him explain something helps me out, but what really drives it home for me is coming back in the next day or so, and tracking through the material on my own.

After that, I played through some of the scale patterns that I've been going over of late.  Not only are the patterns getting easier, but I'm getting faster at picking a random spot on the neck and knowing which key I'm in.  I know I need to be smarter about my approach to studying, and the order I work on things, but I also know that I'm getting more comfortable with things that have always just barely eluded me.

After that, I gathered up a few of the GT CDs that come with the magazine, with the intention of importing the 20 minutes of jam tracks they advertise as coming with each CD into iTunes, so I could sync them with my iPod.  For whatever reason, the tracks don't show up when I pop the disc into my CD drive.  Not sure why that is.  Getting those jam tracks all in one place would be really cool for my plans this summer.  I'll have another go tomorrow and see what I come up with then.

I'm already starting to develop a pretty distinct plan for tomorrow's practicing.  Should be a good start to the weekend, I hope.

Day Three

Short one today. I've got a bunch of the DVDs that Guitar World has put out. Waded through those to see what I had, worked off of the lead guitar one. Just basic scales , but still a light place to begin. It was nice to just start loosening up my fingers again. Off from work tomorrow, so hopefully I'll get a lot of playing done. Said I'd mention the other project I'm hoping to finish this year. Back when I was living in WI, I started a hard rock band with a friend of mine. She was heavily influenced by Evanescence, and so, with her as vocalist, we started writing songs. We had written and demoed almost a full album's worth of music by the time I moved to IA, and had even purchased a P.A. in preparation for eventual gigs. We never did find a permanent drummer or bassist, so our demos sound very rough (and not nearly loud enough). I'd like to finish those songs, and make an EP of the 4 or 5 strongest, just as a way to put a cap on that project. More tom...

Day Three Hundred Fifty Seven (Year Seven)

Today was okay.  It ended up being quieter than I wanted it to be, but I got in a few things. 1.  I got the music from the car hauled in and sorted out in advance of my road trip to Dubuque for a little longer than a day.  I'm taking the Radiohead reissue with me for that, since I haven't gotten a chance to sit down with it yet. 2.  I'm also taking an empty notebook along with me, in the hopes that I might start to get some lyric ideas down on paper while I'm gone.  I watched some cool videos early this morning about the idea of writing all of the music before writing lyrics, and the way things are going that is looking like what's going on with me. 3.  I wish there had been more playing today, but I'm still feeling good about where things are sitting.  This next week needs to include a lot of writing.

Day One Hundred Forty Two

So, I haven't been sleeping much lately, and I've been staying up late. listening to music, doing a bit of playing, and watching old episodes of Behind The Music on the internet. It's funny, you know, because I never met the rest of my "band," I've become the critic. It's all right, don't get me wrong, but for a decade now I've always hoped that I'd find a way to release something. It'll happen, I know it will, but it's continually happened slower than I expected it to. I've gotten close to getting something released, as I've documented before here before, but with the winter coming and the cold closing in, I'm facing another chance to make something musical of the winter. I'm going to start by finishing up the old things that have gotten pushed to the sides in the last few months. With the buildup of everything since the summer, it should be easier. Even if all I do is spend the winter writing lyrics, trying to g...
