Day Sixty Three (Year Three)

Today was an interesting hodgepodge of things.  Started reading a music book on my NOOK.  Not a biography, mind you (anyone who follows me on an even semi-regular basis knows that if I buy a music bio, it's always in real book form), but a fictional story that centers on music.  It's called Meet The Annas, and it's by Robert Dunn.  I'm only 70 pages in, but it does a good job of covering the era of the late 50's/early 60's girl group era.

Taught again today.  The lesson went okay.  Didn't cover as much as we have the last few weeks, but I think that'll be okay.  Especially considering that there's a quiz scheduled for next week.

And speaking of teaching, I had two people reply to my online ad for lessons!  I sent them responses, so now we shall see if I end up with more lessons.  Could be an exciting day tomorrow.

Also, it's time to take Lost In Space by Aimee Mann out of the car stereo.  It's been there for a few weeks now, and it's a great record, I'm just in the mood to listen to something new.  It's probably a good thing that both the new Mumford & Sons and the new Green Day should be here in the next couple of days.  According to the tracking information, my CDs are spending the night in Sioux Falls tonight.  It makes me wonder whether there's a chance they'll get here tomorrow.  More likely it'll be Thursday, but tomorrow would be awesome.

On tap for tomorrow:

1) More work on the Dave Grohl Challenge
2) "Red House"

Dat Two Hundred Thirty One (Year Three)

So, apparently the new Airborne EP that came out yesterday is MP3 only!  Downloaded that as soon as I figured it out this morning, but didn't have time to sync the ipod after doing so.  Therefore, I naturally had a ton of time to listen tonight that was away from my computer. On the plus side, though, I was able to spend some of that extra time with a guitar in my hands, working on the chord progression for this month's song.  I've got an opening chord change that I really like, and the flicker of a two guitar approach, with one of the two parts capoed up the neck dancing somewhere in the back of my brain.  If all goes according to plan, it could work out really well. Also, finally over halfway in the Grohl bio.  Considering I was hardly home at all today, I feel like I got a decent chunk of that read. Tomorrow should (hopefully) be another decent day for music, with a chance to play in the evening, and enough time for a few runs through the Airborne EP....

Day Three

Short one today. I've got a bunch of the DVDs that Guitar World has put out. Waded through those to see what I had, worked off of the lead guitar one. Just basic scales , but still a light place to begin. It was nice to just start loosening up my fingers again. Off from work tomorrow, so hopefully I'll get a lot of playing done. Said I'd mention the other project I'm hoping to finish this year. Back when I was living in WI, I started a hard rock band with a friend of mine. She was heavily influenced by Evanescence, and so, with her as vocalist, we started writing songs. We had written and demoed almost a full album's worth of music by the time I moved to IA, and had even purchased a P.A. in preparation for eventual gigs. We never did find a permanent drummer or bassist, so our demos sound very rough (and not nearly loud enough). I'd like to finish those songs, and make an EP of the 4 or 5 strongest, just as a way to put a cap on that project. More tom...

Day Two Hundred Twenty Seven (Year Two)

So, the new Springsteen disc is amazing.  There's enough of a mixture of his upbeat rockers, his ballads, and his message songs to make this his best record since The Rising .  And speaking of that record... Buying The Boss the day it comes out always takes me back to a specific moment in life.  It was July 30th, 2002, the year after 9/11, the year after someone on the streets of New York told Springsteen "we need you now."  I had driven to Oshkosh, WI to visit some friends, when I remembered that Springsteen's disc was scheduled to come out that day.  I drove downtown to The Exclusive Company, but had to park a few blocks back.  At the time, there wasn't much going on downtown, but when I got out of the car, I could hear this music coming from up the block somewhere.  The closer I got to Exclusive, the more it began to dawn on me, they had set up a giant set of speakers in their upstairs windows, and were blasting the new album out into the streets....
