So, one of the obstacles that was keeping me from making a record in my living room was the simple fact that things weren't as well organized as they otherwise should have been. I took care of that problem before noon today, getting all of the folders and assorted magazines off of the floor, and making sure that the tab books and LPs had a dedicated space that was both accessible and still out of the way of general traffic through the room.
After cleaning things up, I took a moment to enjoy the newness of the space, and then promptly sprawled out on the floor, grabbed the notebook that I had brought with me when I taught the other day, and spent about half an hour taking notes on the lesson experience. I filled up an entire page with reflections, notes on where my student is in her process, and thoughts on what we might do next week. Getting that done felt really good. I now feel like I know where things are headed going into next week, which not only sets my mind at ease, but also gives me a base from which to plan.
Also of note in regards to lessons, SL was in Sioux City today, and was able to find me some stickers that are musical in nature. Now my students will have a way to keep track of their progress as well.
Then I got down to the fun part of the day. I printed off that Dave Grohl quote from yesterday, and taped it onto the cover of an otherwise empty notebook. Then I threw in Back And Forth, the Foo Fighters documentary from last year, as motivation, grabbed some chord sheets and my acoustic, and started in on the process of making an album in my living room. The only thing I didn't have by my side was the complete scores from the Beatles, but apparently that mattered less today than it might have on other days, because I got two new song ideas. I even talked with my brother for a bit to pick his music theory loving brain for a better way to resolve a progression.
The cool part? If I take those two ideas, and factor in the one that I got (exactly) a month ago when I brought up the blue kick-around acoustic, I've got three potential song ideas for this project. I'm trying to keep most of the ideas as new ones this time around, although there's one that I suspect will find its way into the eventual track listing that's probably at least 8 years old, if not more.
All told, it was a good music day, and a positive first step for (maybe) making a record.
