Day Eighty (Year Five)

I knew heading into the day last night's post didn't have all that much bite to it, and so I really tried to make up for that, at least somewhat.

I got into the studio for two sessions today.  The first one, early this morning, wound up being more focused on sprucing up the music for one of the songs that will make the EP I'm still hoping to get finished by the end of the year.  I had been frustrated with the sound of the song for a while, even though I liked the basic idea of it.  A bit of thought, and a few minutes with a capo changed everything, though, as the issue turned out to have more to do with the key I was playing it in than anything else.  What I really need to do next in order for finishing that to be realistic by the end of the year is make sure that I've got recordings that are passable, and then just drive around with the music in my car for a while, and see what lyric ideas start to pop up.

Tonight's session was more focused on the scales & soloing side of things.  It was an admittedly shorter session than I thought I might get tonight, but it did focus not only on the information out of the columns I've been working from, but also a bit of the Vai 30 hour workout.  I haven't had the kind of time available to be able to dive headlong into that yet (or perhaps haven't made the best use of the time I've had), but I am definitely looking at Wednesday (my day off this week) as a chance to do just that.  Should be a good week.

Day Three

Short one today. I've got a bunch of the DVDs that Guitar World has put out. Waded through those to see what I had, worked off of the lead guitar one. Just basic scales , but still a light place to begin. It was nice to just start loosening up my fingers again. Off from work tomorrow, so hopefully I'll get a lot of playing done. Said I'd mention the other project I'm hoping to finish this year. Back when I was living in WI, I started a hard rock band with a friend of mine. She was heavily influenced by Evanescence, and so, with her as vocalist, we started writing songs. We had written and demoed almost a full album's worth of music by the time I moved to IA, and had even purchased a P.A. in preparation for eventual gigs. We never did find a permanent drummer or bassist, so our demos sound very rough (and not nearly loud enough). I'd like to finish those songs, and make an EP of the 4 or 5 strongest, just as a way to put a cap on that project. More tom...

Day Three Hundred Fifty Seven (Year Seven)

Today was okay.  It ended up being quieter than I wanted it to be, but I got in a few things. 1.  I got the music from the car hauled in and sorted out in advance of my road trip to Dubuque for a little longer than a day.  I'm taking the Radiohead reissue with me for that, since I haven't gotten a chance to sit down with it yet. 2.  I'm also taking an empty notebook along with me, in the hopes that I might start to get some lyric ideas down on paper while I'm gone.  I watched some cool videos early this morning about the idea of writing all of the music before writing lyrics, and the way things are going that is looking like what's going on with me. 3.  I wish there had been more playing today, but I'm still feeling good about where things are sitting.  This next week needs to include a lot of writing.

Day One Hundred Forty Two

So, I haven't been sleeping much lately, and I've been staying up late. listening to music, doing a bit of playing, and watching old episodes of Behind The Music on the internet. It's funny, you know, because I never met the rest of my "band," I've become the critic. It's all right, don't get me wrong, but for a decade now I've always hoped that I'd find a way to release something. It'll happen, I know it will, but it's continually happened slower than I expected it to. I've gotten close to getting something released, as I've documented before here before, but with the winter coming and the cold closing in, I'm facing another chance to make something musical of the winter. I'm going to start by finishing up the old things that have gotten pushed to the sides in the last few months. With the buildup of everything since the summer, it should be easier. Even if all I do is spend the winter writing lyrics, trying to g...
