Day One Hundred Thirty Nine (Year Four)

Started to get back into things a little bit today, after having yesterday's musical output somewhat stunted by sad family news.

Getting back into the studio tonight was good, and immediately my eye was drawn to the pile of materials currently residing on the desk chair in the music room: it's all of the scale stuff, composition stuff, and other assorted bits of theory that have been (or attempted to be) a focal point the last few weeks.

I went back to the fretboard knowledge lesson from the book of stuff re-printed from Guitar One, and tried to pick up somewhere near where I was the last time I looked at it.  Wound up working on the part of that lesson that focuses in on learning scalar runs from each of the different C's (or D's or E's, etc) on the fretboard.  That aspect of things seemed to be getting a little bit easier tonight, at least when it comes to putting the pieces together.  Considering that I didn't spend all that much time with it, I'm feeling pretty good.

The rest of tonight was spent on listening, and a bit of time with an acoustic strapped over my shoulder.  Felt good to get back to that tonight.

Tomorrow will be a long day.  There's a meeting after work, but I'm really hoping for a solid chunk of time after I get home to head into the studio.  Hopefully some more playing, and maybe even a bit of the organizing I keep pushing off to the side.

Dat Two Hundred Thirty One (Year Three)

So, apparently the new Airborne EP that came out yesterday is MP3 only!  Downloaded that as soon as I figured it out this morning, but didn't have time to sync the ipod after doing so.  Therefore, I naturally had a ton of time to listen tonight that was away from my computer. On the plus side, though, I was able to spend some of that extra time with a guitar in my hands, working on the chord progression for this month's song.  I've got an opening chord change that I really like, and the flicker of a two guitar approach, with one of the two parts capoed up the neck dancing somewhere in the back of my brain.  If all goes according to plan, it could work out really well. Also, finally over halfway in the Grohl bio.  Considering I was hardly home at all today, I feel like I got a decent chunk of that read. Tomorrow should (hopefully) be another decent day for music, with a chance to play in the evening, and enough time for a few runs through the Airborne EP....

Day Two Hundred Twenty Seven (Year Two)

So, the new Springsteen disc is amazing.  There's enough of a mixture of his upbeat rockers, his ballads, and his message songs to make this his best record since The Rising .  And speaking of that record... Buying The Boss the day it comes out always takes me back to a specific moment in life.  It was July 30th, 2002, the year after 9/11, the year after someone on the streets of New York told Springsteen "we need you now."  I had driven to Oshkosh, WI to visit some friends, when I remembered that Springsteen's disc was scheduled to come out that day.  I drove downtown to The Exclusive Company, but had to park a few blocks back.  At the time, there wasn't much going on downtown, but when I got out of the car, I could hear this music coming from up the block somewhere.  The closer I got to Exclusive, the more it began to dawn on me, they had set up a giant set of speakers in their upstairs windows, and were blasting the new album out into the streets....

Day Two Hundred Sixty Six (Year Six)

One of the biggest advantages of not getting all that much done this week is that it clues me in to what I need/want to take on vacation with me.  It's basically everything that went along with me when we left to go and dog sit on Monday night.  Granted, there are a few extra things I need to pack (the notebooks with the first two recording projects in them, for example), but that shouldn't be too hard to fit in. Most of the day tomorrow is full already, but there might be a bit of time in the evening (like there was today) to get into the studio.  Then, possibly a few hours on Sunday morning before we hit the road around noon. My shoulders have started to loosen up a bit from all of the insanity the last few weeks.  I'm ready to finally have an extended chance to focus on music next week.
