Day One Hundred Thirty Two (Year Two)

Day two of the binder project was productive, but before I get to that, I should mention the other cool things that happened today at work.

1) I had a regular customer come in and drop off his copy of the new Pearl Jam documentary "just in case I wanted to watch it."  Seriously, how awesome is that?  I'll still buy it eventually, but it's pretty cool that I get to check it out.  It's only the first disc, so I won't get to check out whatever the special features are, but hey, I can't complain when I get to borrow it, now can I?

2) I talked to G. at work about my brother's classical music addiction as it relates to Christmas presents.  Got some pretty sweet ideas from her, too.  That takes a bit of the pressure off for that one, and has the added bonus of kicking off my holiday shopping.

The cool part about the second day of the binder thing is this:  I've got the absolute bare-bones, this is what I have, part out of the way.

And so today I started the exciting part: the "going through everything and adding it in as I see fit" part.  For months now, there have been various piles of music-related magazines, articles, etc. scattered in piles throughout my apartment.  Part of this is because I knew that, at some point, I'd incorporate them into the binder.  The other part of it is that, until I cleaned off the kitchen table and got serious about this, I've really had nowhere to spread this whole project out.  What my place really needs (but likely has no space for), is a table of some sort that I can use for organizing and utilizing music stuff.

As for what's going into the binder, the sorting process is still ongoing tonight, but I knew if I didn't write about it at the moment, that I'd get too involved and miss the deadline.  That said, I'll be more able to comment on the first round of stuff that goes in tomorrow than I am today, so I shall hold off on doing so tonight.  The process goes well. however, so that's encouraging.

Day Three

Short one today. I've got a bunch of the DVDs that Guitar World has put out. Waded through those to see what I had, worked off of the lead guitar one. Just basic scales , but still a light place to begin. It was nice to just start loosening up my fingers again. Off from work tomorrow, so hopefully I'll get a lot of playing done. Said I'd mention the other project I'm hoping to finish this year. Back when I was living in WI, I started a hard rock band with a friend of mine. She was heavily influenced by Evanescence, and so, with her as vocalist, we started writing songs. We had written and demoed almost a full album's worth of music by the time I moved to IA, and had even purchased a P.A. in preparation for eventual gigs. We never did find a permanent drummer or bassist, so our demos sound very rough (and not nearly loud enough). I'd like to finish those songs, and make an EP of the 4 or 5 strongest, just as a way to put a cap on that project. More tom...

Day Three Hundred Fifty Seven (Year Seven)

Today was okay.  It ended up being quieter than I wanted it to be, but I got in a few things. 1.  I got the music from the car hauled in and sorted out in advance of my road trip to Dubuque for a little longer than a day.  I'm taking the Radiohead reissue with me for that, since I haven't gotten a chance to sit down with it yet. 2.  I'm also taking an empty notebook along with me, in the hopes that I might start to get some lyric ideas down on paper while I'm gone.  I watched some cool videos early this morning about the idea of writing all of the music before writing lyrics, and the way things are going that is looking like what's going on with me. 3.  I wish there had been more playing today, but I'm still feeling good about where things are sitting.  This next week needs to include a lot of writing.

Day One Hundred Forty Two

So, I haven't been sleeping much lately, and I've been staying up late. listening to music, doing a bit of playing, and watching old episodes of Behind The Music on the internet. It's funny, you know, because I never met the rest of my "band," I've become the critic. It's all right, don't get me wrong, but for a decade now I've always hoped that I'd find a way to release something. It'll happen, I know it will, but it's continually happened slower than I expected it to. I've gotten close to getting something released, as I've documented before here before, but with the winter coming and the cold closing in, I'm facing another chance to make something musical of the winter. I'm going to start by finishing up the old things that have gotten pushed to the sides in the last few months. With the buildup of everything since the summer, it should be easier. Even if all I do is spend the winter writing lyrics, trying to g...
