Day One Hundred Thirty Six (Year Two)

I got something crossed off the list of bare-bones binder stuff done tonight: I finished off the last half of the note sheets for all of the keys.  That had been the last piece of the things that I had started last year sometime.  I know it's a small step, but it really feels like crossing off one of the small things that will let me move on to bigger and better challenges ahead.  I'm glad that's finished, and I think it will be really helpful, because when you're trying to get to where you know you need to be, it's one thing to know the steps you need to take, but it's entirely another to see them all laid out in front of you.

R. sent me a text message today, practically begging for me to set aside the new Black Keys record for her when I got to work.  I did.  And I set aside one for myself as well.  I picked them both up at the end of my shift.  We're having dinner/drinks after I get done with work tomorrow, so she'll get her copy then.  I, on the other hand, will listen to mine either tonight before bed, or tomorrow before work.

Still trying to nail down all of the magazines with Richard Lloyd's column in them.  I've got a pretty good idea of where the rest of them are, though, as I ran across another stash of mags right before I left for work today.  That's got to be where the others are, because I know I brought all of them with me when I moved here from WI.

This binder thing seems to be going really well.  There has definitely been discernible progress each day this month, which is encouraging.  I need to be doing more playing in conjunction with the creation of the binder, no doubt, but I figure that until I can get a bit more sorted out and organized, I'm doing okay with what I'm working on.

I've got to finish off that Pearl Jam documentary in the next couple of days here and get that back to the good soul who loaned it to me, if only so I can pester him about setting up the binder.

Off to crank up the Black Keys... after all, the sticker on the cellophane it's wrapped in says "PLAY LOUD."

Day Three

Short one today. I've got a bunch of the DVDs that Guitar World has put out. Waded through those to see what I had, worked off of the lead guitar one. Just basic scales , but still a light place to begin. It was nice to just start loosening up my fingers again. Off from work tomorrow, so hopefully I'll get a lot of playing done. Said I'd mention the other project I'm hoping to finish this year. Back when I was living in WI, I started a hard rock band with a friend of mine. She was heavily influenced by Evanescence, and so, with her as vocalist, we started writing songs. We had written and demoed almost a full album's worth of music by the time I moved to IA, and had even purchased a P.A. in preparation for eventual gigs. We never did find a permanent drummer or bassist, so our demos sound very rough (and not nearly loud enough). I'd like to finish those songs, and make an EP of the 4 or 5 strongest, just as a way to put a cap on that project. More tom...

Day Three Hundred Fifty Seven (Year Seven)

Today was okay.  It ended up being quieter than I wanted it to be, but I got in a few things. 1.  I got the music from the car hauled in and sorted out in advance of my road trip to Dubuque for a little longer than a day.  I'm taking the Radiohead reissue with me for that, since I haven't gotten a chance to sit down with it yet. 2.  I'm also taking an empty notebook along with me, in the hopes that I might start to get some lyric ideas down on paper while I'm gone.  I watched some cool videos early this morning about the idea of writing all of the music before writing lyrics, and the way things are going that is looking like what's going on with me. 3.  I wish there had been more playing today, but I'm still feeling good about where things are sitting.  This next week needs to include a lot of writing.

Day One Hundred Forty Two

So, I haven't been sleeping much lately, and I've been staying up late. listening to music, doing a bit of playing, and watching old episodes of Behind The Music on the internet. It's funny, you know, because I never met the rest of my "band," I've become the critic. It's all right, don't get me wrong, but for a decade now I've always hoped that I'd find a way to release something. It'll happen, I know it will, but it's continually happened slower than I expected it to. I've gotten close to getting something released, as I've documented before here before, but with the winter coming and the cold closing in, I'm facing another chance to make something musical of the winter. I'm going to start by finishing up the old things that have gotten pushed to the sides in the last few months. With the buildup of everything since the summer, it should be easier. Even if all I do is spend the winter writing lyrics, trying to g...
