It was a good time in the studio today. I picked up the acoustic the second I got down there, and spent the first few minutes warming up and doing some listening. As usual when this happens, I wound up detouring away from the writing side of things, and starting playing along with whatever it is I'm listening to at that moment. Today, and most days lately, it has been a lot of Jason Isbell.
After I finished playing through a few of his songs, I started to try and work on some new music my own. I didn't find a whole lot of new stuff tonight, but like always, there were a few small ideas that I filed away for further consideration. I know I haven't been great about getting a lot of writing done in the last few months, and I'm also well aware that, if I'm going to have anything substantial to show by the end of the year, that I really need to step it up.
One thing I feel I have been good at lately is making sure that I always have a notebook within reach, should anything remotely lyrical pop into my head. In a perfect world, whenever I sit down to work on music, I'd love to have at least a phrase or a line or something to work off of. I'm pretty sure that I've got myself so psyched out about lyric writing at this point that I'm not doing myself any real favors. What I'd like to do is try and sit down, even for fifteen minutes a day, and just try to focus in on lyric writing, just to get myself back in the habit of actively working on songs. In fact, I may well male that a definite goal for the week.
Today was all right, but could have been a little bit better.
