Day Three Hundred Thirty Nine (Year Six)

So, my statement at the end of last night was that the studio needed to be "up and running" by the time I went to bed tonight.  Technically, I got there.

All of the magazines are shelved, all of the boxes are emptied and cleared out (with one exception, which I'll get to in a second), and while the instruments are still in their cases at the moment, that will change in the morning.  In short, if I wanted to record right now, I could.

And yet, the studio isn't completely finished yet.  The stereo and turntable aren't hooked up yet.  The speakers for the stereo are the sole box that's left in the studio.  Aside from that, the iMac that I got from my stepdad, that I keep meaning to play around with to see if it can help me in recording (it's almost 10 years old) is the only other thing that needs to be sorted out.  Both of those things should be fairly easy for me to knock out on a good night's sleep, so assuming all goes smoothly, tomorrow before noon everything should be ready to go.

Am I disappointed that I wasn't able to finish off everything tonight?  Only slightly.  In reality, I'm a whole lot happier with all that I was able to get done in the last two days, especially when I stop to consider that we had family in town.

Tomorrow feels like a victory lap, if only a small one.  Because once everything is squared away down there (and the boxes are broken down), then the real fun begins.

Day Three

Short one today. I've got a bunch of the DVDs that Guitar World has put out. Waded through those to see what I had, worked off of the lead guitar one. Just basic scales , but still a light place to begin. It was nice to just start loosening up my fingers again. Off from work tomorrow, so hopefully I'll get a lot of playing done. Said I'd mention the other project I'm hoping to finish this year. Back when I was living in WI, I started a hard rock band with a friend of mine. She was heavily influenced by Evanescence, and so, with her as vocalist, we started writing songs. We had written and demoed almost a full album's worth of music by the time I moved to IA, and had even purchased a P.A. in preparation for eventual gigs. We never did find a permanent drummer or bassist, so our demos sound very rough (and not nearly loud enough). I'd like to finish those songs, and make an EP of the 4 or 5 strongest, just as a way to put a cap on that project. More tom...

Day Three Hundred Fifty Seven (Year Seven)

Today was okay.  It ended up being quieter than I wanted it to be, but I got in a few things. 1.  I got the music from the car hauled in and sorted out in advance of my road trip to Dubuque for a little longer than a day.  I'm taking the Radiohead reissue with me for that, since I haven't gotten a chance to sit down with it yet. 2.  I'm also taking an empty notebook along with me, in the hopes that I might start to get some lyric ideas down on paper while I'm gone.  I watched some cool videos early this morning about the idea of writing all of the music before writing lyrics, and the way things are going that is looking like what's going on with me. 3.  I wish there had been more playing today, but I'm still feeling good about where things are sitting.  This next week needs to include a lot of writing.

Day One Hundred Forty Two

So, I haven't been sleeping much lately, and I've been staying up late. listening to music, doing a bit of playing, and watching old episodes of Behind The Music on the internet. It's funny, you know, because I never met the rest of my "band," I've become the critic. It's all right, don't get me wrong, but for a decade now I've always hoped that I'd find a way to release something. It'll happen, I know it will, but it's continually happened slower than I expected it to. I've gotten close to getting something released, as I've documented before here before, but with the winter coming and the cold closing in, I'm facing another chance to make something musical of the winter. I'm going to start by finishing up the old things that have gotten pushed to the sides in the last few months. With the buildup of everything since the summer, it should be easier. Even if all I do is spend the winter writing lyrics, trying to g...
