Day Twenty Six (Year Four)

We've hit the point in this round of the Start Experiment where things are about to get very interesting.  I feel like the first week has been a productive one, although not as productive as it maybe could have been.  That being said, I'm happy with the progress that has been made thus far, and can't wait to see where I am two weeks from now.  Here's why stuff is getting interesting:

We move to Dubuque on Friday.  Packing is really starting to ramp up now.  As that happens, the time available to spend on music stuff is going to decrease for a bit (for obvious reasons).  That being said, I still stumbled across a couple of books today that had avoided my previous packing but will definitely have a place in the practice regimen once all is said and done.  They were:

100 Licks & Chops For Rock Guitar
100 Licks & Chops For Blues Guitar

I had found them at a Half Price Books a couple of years back, and they seem pretty great, so they go into the list of resources I'll find a way to include.

Also tonight, I'm uploading some of the new music I've purchased in the last few weeks.  The ipod desperately needs to be charged tomorrow, and it makes sense to me that, if I'm going to charge it, I ought to have some new tunes on it.

This next seven days feels huge to me.  It's going to be busy, yes, but it will hold the key to whether or not this run of START will be the kind of success I'd like it to be, or whether it will be a smaller stepping stone.

I teach two more guitar lessons before we leave.  One tomorrow, and one on Wednesday, and then it's off to the Eastern side of the state, where the only immediate musical concerns are work on the binder and setting up the studio!  Only FOUR more days until I have that space!  Getting closer.  Pictures of the setup will be posted for sure.

That's all for today.  More tomorrow, and better, as always.

Dat Two Hundred Thirty One (Year Three)

So, apparently the new Airborne EP that came out yesterday is MP3 only!  Downloaded that as soon as I figured it out this morning, but didn't have time to sync the ipod after doing so.  Therefore, I naturally had a ton of time to listen tonight that was away from my computer. On the plus side, though, I was able to spend some of that extra time with a guitar in my hands, working on the chord progression for this month's song.  I've got an opening chord change that I really like, and the flicker of a two guitar approach, with one of the two parts capoed up the neck dancing somewhere in the back of my brain.  If all goes according to plan, it could work out really well. Also, finally over halfway in the Grohl bio.  Considering I was hardly home at all today, I feel like I got a decent chunk of that read. Tomorrow should (hopefully) be another decent day for music, with a chance to play in the evening, and enough time for a few runs through the Airborne EP....

Day Three

Short one today. I've got a bunch of the DVDs that Guitar World has put out. Waded through those to see what I had, worked off of the lead guitar one. Just basic scales , but still a light place to begin. It was nice to just start loosening up my fingers again. Off from work tomorrow, so hopefully I'll get a lot of playing done. Said I'd mention the other project I'm hoping to finish this year. Back when I was living in WI, I started a hard rock band with a friend of mine. She was heavily influenced by Evanescence, and so, with her as vocalist, we started writing songs. We had written and demoed almost a full album's worth of music by the time I moved to IA, and had even purchased a P.A. in preparation for eventual gigs. We never did find a permanent drummer or bassist, so our demos sound very rough (and not nearly loud enough). I'd like to finish those songs, and make an EP of the 4 or 5 strongest, just as a way to put a cap on that project. More tom...

Day Two Hundred Twenty Seven (Year Two)

So, the new Springsteen disc is amazing.  There's enough of a mixture of his upbeat rockers, his ballads, and his message songs to make this his best record since The Rising .  And speaking of that record... Buying The Boss the day it comes out always takes me back to a specific moment in life.  It was July 30th, 2002, the year after 9/11, the year after someone on the streets of New York told Springsteen "we need you now."  I had driven to Oshkosh, WI to visit some friends, when I remembered that Springsteen's disc was scheduled to come out that day.  I drove downtown to The Exclusive Company, but had to park a few blocks back.  At the time, there wasn't much going on downtown, but when I got out of the car, I could hear this music coming from up the block somewhere.  The closer I got to Exclusive, the more it began to dawn on me, they had set up a giant set of speakers in their upstairs windows, and were blasting the new album out into the streets....
