So, today was supposed to be a day of rest for the Start Experiment, and I tried... no really, I did. But in the end, I couldn't quite make it the whole day without doing at least something to advance the cause of the binder. In my head it was something about having waited as long as I have to actually do this, why on earth would I take a day off willingly?
So, yeah, for years now I've talked about having the lesson binder be based, at least somewhat, around a list of songs that I have found influential or important to me in my quest to improve as a musician. Whether it's the stuff that inspired me to pick up a guitar in the first place, something I just flat out love, or the first solo that made me go, "oh man, I've GOT to learn that," there has always been a song that has helped me on my way. Here's what I've got so far. This list will definitely be added to as the next few weeks go along.
"Johnny B. Goode" & "Roll Over Beethoven" - Chuck Berry
"That'll Be The Day," "It's So Easy," & "Rock Around With Ollie Vee" - Buddy Holly
"Little Wing," "Rude Mood," & "Pride & Joy" - Stevie Ray Vaughan
"Nobody Knows You When You're Down & Out," "Have You Ever Loved A Woman," & "Layla (both versions)" - Eric Clapton
"Wanted It To Be," & "Fortress" - Sister Hazel
"Girlfriend" - Matthew Sweet
"Red House" - Jimi Hendrix
"Classical Gas" - Mason Williams
"Yellow Ledbetter" - Pearl Jam
"Mr. Jones," "A Long December," "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby," & "Goodnight Elizabeth" - Counting Crows
That was the original list. Other stuff that I've since thought of includes:
"I'm Tore Down" - Clapton
"Sweet Child O' Mine" - Guns n' Roses
"Free Bird" & "Gimmie Three Steps - Lynyrd Skynyrd
There's so much electric stuff on this list, I think I might need two lists... one for electric stuff, and one for acoustic. And there's no Beatles on here yet... but they will have their own unit in this process, and that will probably deserve a post of its own, so I'm not all too worried about that yet.
Not bad for an initial run-through. Still, though, so many holes to fill... like, I just realized there's no Zep on the list yet... "Stairway," maybe? or "When The Levee Breaks."
Clearly there's more work to be done here...
