So, my favorite performances of "A Long December" are always the ones where Adam screws up. Somehow it adds an extra level of emotional punch that isn't there in the perfect versions of it. Well, he screwed it up Tuesday night in Kansas City, and it was beautiful.
So, my hope is to turn the Crows show into a few days worth of posts, if only because there's that much that I want to talk about. SL took detailed notes that included the setlist, and any other funny stories/comments from Adam that struck her during the show. I haven't gotten a peek at her notes yet, but I figure that'll occupy a post, with a link to her writing about it (because I figure there will be writing about it).
That said, the setlist below was one I found online for the show. It seems accurate from my memory, but I'll compare it when I see SL's notes. Here's what they played:
Sullivan Street
Untitled (Love Song)
Another Horsedreamer's Blues
Black & Blue
Four Days
Hospital
Anna Begins
Start Again
Hard Candy
Four White Stallions
Come Around
Rain King
Like Teenage Gravity
A Long December
You Ain't Goin' Nowhere
Encore:
Washington Square
Hanginaround
California Dreamin' (singalong)
All in all, a pretty great set. Although why in the name of god they decided to open the encore with "Washington Square" I will never know. I get that Adam loves that song. I just wish he'd tell us why, so we can perhaps like the song for the emotional weight it carries, instead of disliking it due to a lack of melody.
Mind you, with a band like the Crows, so many quibbles are possible, but all of them (no "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby," no "Goodnight Elizabeth," no "St. Robinson In His Cadillac Dream," no "Mr. Jones" are all based entirely on favorite songs. That said, I was happy to hear "Another Horsedreamer's Blues."
One thing I just noticed about the setlist, somewhere in there they played "Return Of The Grievous Angel" by Gram Parsons from Underwater Sunshine, so evidently I'll be re-posting that for sure at some point in the next few days.
So many things to talk about... like openers Kasey Anderson & The Honkies (who were incredible!), the haul from the merch table (vinyl, posters, t-shirts), the awesome venue (while in a bit of a scary part of town, the Starlight is a great place to see a show).
More on the show tomorrow, I promise.
