Day Three Hundred Nine (Year Two)

Today was a bit of a crazy day for me, music-wise.  I got up early and stopped off at work to both pick up Regina Spektor's What We Saw From The Cheap Seats, and order the LP re-release of August & Everything After.

After that, I needed to go out to the mall to check out some wedding registry stuff, but after crossing that off my list, I allowed myself to stop by FYE and browse through their CDs.  I've found some cool stuff there in the last few months, and today was no exception.  I got really good deals, though, so in my head it's okay.  Here's what I wound up with

1) Here - Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros
2) Something To Remember Me By - Ben Lee ($6.99!)
3) Welcome To Discovery Park - Brad ($.50!)
4) The Daddy Of Them All - Space Monkeys ($1.50!)

The Brad record intrigues me because it's one of Stone Gossard's side projects.  Speaking of Stone, after the last few Pearl Jam records have been so awesome, I could stand to hear a new one by them, too.

The Space Monkeys record is more of an inside joke than anything else.  I've never heard of them before.

My potential downfall today came in stopping off at Hot Topic after leaving FYE.  They had a copy of Aim & Ignite, Fun.'s first record, on vinyl, when I was there last week, and I figured that if it was still there, it was a sign from above that I needed it.  They didn't have it.  They had Some Nights instead.  So I left with that one.

Didn't do much playing today, but I did grab a new printer cartridge, so I can print out some blank bass tab sheets that I can actually read.  I'll jot some of those ideas down before I fall asleep tonight.  I took a two hour couch nap from 9-11, so I should be up for a while.  All in all, a really good, really relaxing day off.

Day Three

Short one today. I've got a bunch of the DVDs that Guitar World has put out. Waded through those to see what I had, worked off of the lead guitar one. Just basic scales , but still a light place to begin. It was nice to just start loosening up my fingers again. Off from work tomorrow, so hopefully I'll get a lot of playing done. Said I'd mention the other project I'm hoping to finish this year. Back when I was living in WI, I started a hard rock band with a friend of mine. She was heavily influenced by Evanescence, and so, with her as vocalist, we started writing songs. We had written and demoed almost a full album's worth of music by the time I moved to IA, and had even purchased a P.A. in preparation for eventual gigs. We never did find a permanent drummer or bassist, so our demos sound very rough (and not nearly loud enough). I'd like to finish those songs, and make an EP of the 4 or 5 strongest, just as a way to put a cap on that project. More tom...

Day Three Hundred Fifty Seven (Year Seven)

Today was okay.  It ended up being quieter than I wanted it to be, but I got in a few things. 1.  I got the music from the car hauled in and sorted out in advance of my road trip to Dubuque for a little longer than a day.  I'm taking the Radiohead reissue with me for that, since I haven't gotten a chance to sit down with it yet. 2.  I'm also taking an empty notebook along with me, in the hopes that I might start to get some lyric ideas down on paper while I'm gone.  I watched some cool videos early this morning about the idea of writing all of the music before writing lyrics, and the way things are going that is looking like what's going on with me. 3.  I wish there had been more playing today, but I'm still feeling good about where things are sitting.  This next week needs to include a lot of writing.

Day One Hundred Forty Two

So, I haven't been sleeping much lately, and I've been staying up late. listening to music, doing a bit of playing, and watching old episodes of Behind The Music on the internet. It's funny, you know, because I never met the rest of my "band," I've become the critic. It's all right, don't get me wrong, but for a decade now I've always hoped that I'd find a way to release something. It'll happen, I know it will, but it's continually happened slower than I expected it to. I've gotten close to getting something released, as I've documented before here before, but with the winter coming and the cold closing in, I'm facing another chance to make something musical of the winter. I'm going to start by finishing up the old things that have gotten pushed to the sides in the last few months. With the buildup of everything since the summer, it should be easier. Even if all I do is spend the winter writing lyrics, trying to g...
