Day Two Hundred Ninety One (Year Two)

Today was a bit of an odd day.  I took my ipod in to the Apple Store to see what, if anything, they could do about my headphone jack.  As it turned out, there was nothing they could do to repair the jack, so with a bit of a heavy heart, I recycled my old ipod, and bought a new one.  The recycling saved me about $25, so that was cool.

It was tough, though.  That ipod had 5 years of musical memories in it.  I remember when I first got it, Christmas of 2007.  I had wanted an ipod for at least a couple of years, asked for it at every holiday I could.  When I finally got one, I was thrilled beyond belief.  And then a funny thing happened.  The first few weeks... I almost forgot that I had it.  It hadn't quite worked its way into my everyday life yet.  But once it did, oh once it did, the ipod went everywhere with me.  And it has every day for the last 5 years.  Hell, I feel stranger leaving the house without my ipod now than I do without my cell phone.

Also of note, it took me a little more than 3 hours to get all of the music transferred from itunes onto the new ipod.  Then again, 15,000+ songs will do that to you.

Life has been all about new journeys and new experiences for the last 8 months or so, all of them good, so I suppose it makes sense that a new ipod come along on that ride.

Other notes from today include:

1) Apparently Matt Skiba (of Alkaline Trio fame) has a new side project with a backing group called The Sekrets.  The record is called Babylon, and I only stumbled across it because I was out at the mall with some time to kill before my Apple Store appointment.  I stopped in at F.Y.E., and they had the record sitting right out front.  It's like I was supposed to see it.  Skiba's freaking brilliant, so it was definitely a wise purchase.

2) Technically, I discovered this next bit a couple of days ago, I just keep forgetting to write about it.  I was online at work the other day, and flashed back to a couple of years ago, right after Jakob Dylan started releasing solo discs.  The Wallflowers had put out a best of, Collected: 1996-2005, and rumors persisted of a second collection to come with B-sides, rarities, and soundtrack stuff.  It occurred to me to check and see if there was any news on that second disc, and what I found made me smile.  Apparently Jakob is putting the band back together!  Word on the street is that a new Wallflowers record is due out this fall sometime, which makes me happy, because, while I loved his solo records, I have dearly missed his wonderful, rootsy, rock band.

Keith Richards and Jakob Dylan make me want to go out and buy a Telecaster.  Just sayin'.

Day Two Hundred Six (Year Four)

Today was the first official day of the second half of my "album-in-a-month" challenge. As for today's goals, I wanted to see what I could get done in regards to track order, and get at least a little bit of a start on the lyric writing process. I spent more time working on the track order question than I did on the lyrics today, but as a result of that, I ended up with something that I think will work in terms of order. I did sit with the notebook for a few minutes at the very end of the day, and got a solid starting line of lyric and some other ideas that I hope will be jumping off points for lyrics. What I'm thinking I might do, however, is switch my focus from the lyric writing part of the process directly to the recording part of the process.  That way, if I can get the music recorded and burned onto a CD, I can take the music with me in the car, and listen and try to see what images and thoughts the music brings up.  It's a tactic that has worked for...

Day Two Hundred Ninety Nine (Year Four)

Tonight was one of those nights where absolutely nothing went right, but somehow, some way, I managed to get into the studio for a little bit, and make what felt like good progress, all things considered. I went back through the second half of last night's chapter in The Guitarist's Guide To Scales Over Chords , just to make sure that I had a decent grasp of everything that was covered, and then made the move to the next chapter. After the theory-heavy chapter I had just gotten through, it was a great relief to have the next one be more music (playing) centered.  It was all about putting the scale examples they cited in the early chapters to use in a musical context. I've seen a great number of books try to do this in a successful manner, and end up failing spectacularly, but so far I'm liking what this book is putting forward.  They give you "starter" examples, that don't necessarily make the best use of note choices, etc. and then present you with an...

Day Two Hundred Ninety Two (Year Five)

Today was the last seminary village cookout of the year. While we were all sitting around the picnic tables eating dinner, I got a chance to talk with a few of the Mrs.'s classmates about guitar related stuff. As it turns out, more than one of them wants to be more proficient on guitar. I'm not saying that this will lead to more teaching opportunities, but I told one of them that I would throw a folder together for them. Essentially, anytime I get a chance to talk shop is a great chance for me to reinforce some of the things I have been focusing on. If nothing else, it gets me thinking ahead to tomorrow's day off and a chance to get into the studio for a decent amount of time.
