Day Ninety Two (Year Two)

Spent fifteen bucks today on a couple of music magazines.  One is a blues-related mag with a DVD included, and the second is the latest issue of Acoustic Guitar magazine, which came with a bunch of free lessons.

I've got the next two days off, and I'm really excited to have some serious time to focus on my music.  Here's what needs to get done in the next 48 or so hours:

1) Recording.  I've got to nail down the electric part on this song we're working on.  I know I've got the intro right, now all I need to do is get the rest of the song recorded.  It shouldn't be something that takes me that long.  Once the playing part is done, it needs to be sent off to the Dropbox.

2) Practicing.  I'd like to not only hit the magazines I picked up today from a practice perspective, I'd also like to get back to some things I had started in on a while back: Vai's guitar workout, and a few other things that have been sitting on a pile in my living room for far too long.

3) Listening.  I'd like to take the time to finish listening to the Ben Folds that I picked up last week-ish, and I need to import a few things that have been given to me of late, including some live Derek & The Dominos.

4) Reading.  Whether it's on Hendrix, Pearl Jam, music and creativity, or simply magazine articles, there is a lot of material sitting around my apartment that needs to be delved into.

There's a lot to be done, both musical and otherwise, but if I stay focused, I hope I can get to it all.  Wish me luck!

Day One Hundred Forty Two

So, I haven't been sleeping much lately, and I've been staying up late. listening to music, doing a bit of playing, and watching old episodes of Behind The Music on the internet. It's funny, you know, because I never met the rest of my "band," I've become the critic. It's all right, don't get me wrong, but for a decade now I've always hoped that I'd find a way to release something. It'll happen, I know it will, but it's continually happened slower than I expected it to. I've gotten close to getting something released, as I've documented before here before, but with the winter coming and the cold closing in, I'm facing another chance to make something musical of the winter. I'm going to start by finishing up the old things that have gotten pushed to the sides in the last few months. With the buildup of everything since the summer, it should be easier. Even if all I do is spend the winter writing lyrics, trying to g...

DayOne Hundred Sixty Nine (Year Eight)

Today was another good day.  I spent all of it with my brother, which I needed a lot, even though I just saw him over Christmas. Tonight we finally got around to some music discussion.  He took a look at my list of goals for the year, and sees it as a really good set of steps to get me where I'd like to be from where I am.  I picked his brain about a few of the nagging questions I still had as I get started, and he was able to put my mind at ease. Having a chance to sit and chat with him is always good for my musical soul, because he constantly drives me to be a better, more well rounded player, and I'm pretty sure that I can never thank him enough for all of the advice, support, and encouragement he offers every time we chat.

Day Ninety Three (Year Six)

Today was an interesting day. On one hand, it wasn't a day where I spent a ton of time in the studio, but on the other hand, it was a day where the time that I did spend in the studio was probably the most productive time I've had in a long time.  In short, even though I didn't spend all that much time working on the EP tonight, I feel like I got a whole lot closer to finishing it. I've been frustrated with myself lately for not finishing things a bit quicker, and struggling with the fact that, while I have been successful at finding a whole lot of kernels of songs, they haven't seemed to want to sprout into completed works.  Tonight, instead of freaking out and making myself more stressed out, I sat down and looked at a few favorite songs to see if I could sneak a peek behind the veil, if you will. The answers jumped out at me immediately.  I haven't been doing enough with the kernels.  Mostly, I haven't been facilitating the chord changes that will a...
