Day Twenty One (Year Two)

Well, today was the off day in between driving and work.  Chatted for a few minutes with J. this morning.  His third question was whether or not we got any new tracks for the song we were working on before vacation while I was home.  I told him that we were more concerned with finishing up the stuff that remained unfinished (and that we made good progress), but also that I saw no reason why he couldn't have tracks for that song in the next few days.

Spent part of the morning dropping the new music I got while home into iTunes, here's what I ended up with:

1)  Three records (Selftitled, Welcome Interstate Managers, Utopia Parkway) by Fountains of Wayne
2)  Harlem River Blues by Justin Townes Earle (this completes my collection of his released music).
3)  Blood Money by Tom Waits
4)  AM & Being There by Wilco (both on vinyl, & I could've had more)
5)  All I Ever Wanted by The Airborne Toxic Event

and

6)  Back and Forth (New Foo Fighters Documentary)

also purchased was an Exclusive Company t-shirt, solely for making friends in the DSM jealous.  Included was a business card, so that if I desire (and I do), I can call Exclusive, order over the phone, and have them ship things to me... this makes me happier than you can possibly imagine, and if I knew the name of the wonderful young lady who suggested the idea, I would gladly include mention of her here.

Watched the Foos doc this afternoon.  Really, really cool.

Tonight I've been trying to get some lyric work done on one of the songs we finished the music for while I was home.  I'm making a bit of progress, but struggling for the right word to drop into the right place here and there.  It's coming together slowly.  It's funny.  The writing always goes better when I'm playing along, but initially, that only serves to outline song structure.  That's what's happening thus far anyway.  I can only hope that the words will come quicker once the structural issues are resolved.  Either way, I need to write more songs on a more regular basis.

Day Three

Short one today. I've got a bunch of the DVDs that Guitar World has put out. Waded through those to see what I had, worked off of the lead guitar one. Just basic scales , but still a light place to begin. It was nice to just start loosening up my fingers again. Off from work tomorrow, so hopefully I'll get a lot of playing done. Said I'd mention the other project I'm hoping to finish this year. Back when I was living in WI, I started a hard rock band with a friend of mine. She was heavily influenced by Evanescence, and so, with her as vocalist, we started writing songs. We had written and demoed almost a full album's worth of music by the time I moved to IA, and had even purchased a P.A. in preparation for eventual gigs. We never did find a permanent drummer or bassist, so our demos sound very rough (and not nearly loud enough). I'd like to finish those songs, and make an EP of the 4 or 5 strongest, just as a way to put a cap on that project. More tom...

Day Three Hundred Fifty Seven (Year Seven)

Today was okay.  It ended up being quieter than I wanted it to be, but I got in a few things. 1.  I got the music from the car hauled in and sorted out in advance of my road trip to Dubuque for a little longer than a day.  I'm taking the Radiohead reissue with me for that, since I haven't gotten a chance to sit down with it yet. 2.  I'm also taking an empty notebook along with me, in the hopes that I might start to get some lyric ideas down on paper while I'm gone.  I watched some cool videos early this morning about the idea of writing all of the music before writing lyrics, and the way things are going that is looking like what's going on with me. 3.  I wish there had been more playing today, but I'm still feeling good about where things are sitting.  This next week needs to include a lot of writing.

Day One Hundred Forty Two

So, I haven't been sleeping much lately, and I've been staying up late. listening to music, doing a bit of playing, and watching old episodes of Behind The Music on the internet. It's funny, you know, because I never met the rest of my "band," I've become the critic. It's all right, don't get me wrong, but for a decade now I've always hoped that I'd find a way to release something. It'll happen, I know it will, but it's continually happened slower than I expected it to. I've gotten close to getting something released, as I've documented before here before, but with the winter coming and the cold closing in, I'm facing another chance to make something musical of the winter. I'm going to start by finishing up the old things that have gotten pushed to the sides in the last few months. With the buildup of everything since the summer, it should be easier. Even if all I do is spend the winter writing lyrics, trying to g...
