Day Three Hundred Forty Seven

Figured out why I didn't teach yesterday... I had it written down as the 4th, they had it written down as the 5th. Hopefully we can get back on the same page next week, because apparently the kid I'm teaching couldn't stop talking about it afterwards... which in my book makes it a success.

So, in yesterday's post I had mentioned that I wanted to take a second look at a really old song that B. and I had written in the first glut of material we worked on 5 years ago. I pulled up the demo tonight, and tried to listen with fresh ears. I uncovered some interesting things.

First off, I understand completely why we crossed it off 5 years ago. The chord progression is entirely too simplistic, and the verse lyrics don't really work for me. That being said, I still like the intro riff, and the chorus lyric actually holds up fairly well. The progression in the chorus, for what it's worth, isn't perfect, but isn't nearly as rudimentary as the verses.

I can remember us going around in circles over whether or not to keep it or cut it all those years ago, and I suspect that, after weeks of doing that, neither one of us was up for the obvious third option: keep the parts we liked, and see if anything else worked around what we had left.

Assuming I can figure out exactly what we did (we only recorded two tracks, a vocal, and a terribly messy, loud, electric guitar), I don't think it'll take me that long to work up some cooler sounding verses and tighten up the chorus. Then it'll just be a matter of writing some lyrics. If nothing else, it'll make a pretty cool B-side.

B. and I are scheduled to chat on Thursday, so perhaps I can have it re-worked by then. Also, I've got to remember to record the progression I finished yesterday, so she can hear it Thursday night.

Dat Two Hundred Thirty One (Year Three)

So, apparently the new Airborne EP that came out yesterday is MP3 only!  Downloaded that as soon as I figured it out this morning, but didn't have time to sync the ipod after doing so.  Therefore, I naturally had a ton of time to listen tonight that was away from my computer. On the plus side, though, I was able to spend some of that extra time with a guitar in my hands, working on the chord progression for this month's song.  I've got an opening chord change that I really like, and the flicker of a two guitar approach, with one of the two parts capoed up the neck dancing somewhere in the back of my brain.  If all goes according to plan, it could work out really well. Also, finally over halfway in the Grohl bio.  Considering I was hardly home at all today, I feel like I got a decent chunk of that read. Tomorrow should (hopefully) be another decent day for music, with a chance to play in the evening, and enough time for a few runs through the Airborne EP....

Day Three

Short one today. I've got a bunch of the DVDs that Guitar World has put out. Waded through those to see what I had, worked off of the lead guitar one. Just basic scales , but still a light place to begin. It was nice to just start loosening up my fingers again. Off from work tomorrow, so hopefully I'll get a lot of playing done. Said I'd mention the other project I'm hoping to finish this year. Back when I was living in WI, I started a hard rock band with a friend of mine. She was heavily influenced by Evanescence, and so, with her as vocalist, we started writing songs. We had written and demoed almost a full album's worth of music by the time I moved to IA, and had even purchased a P.A. in preparation for eventual gigs. We never did find a permanent drummer or bassist, so our demos sound very rough (and not nearly loud enough). I'd like to finish those songs, and make an EP of the 4 or 5 strongest, just as a way to put a cap on that project. More tom...

Day Two Hundred Twenty Seven (Year Two)

So, the new Springsteen disc is amazing.  There's enough of a mixture of his upbeat rockers, his ballads, and his message songs to make this his best record since The Rising .  And speaking of that record... Buying The Boss the day it comes out always takes me back to a specific moment in life.  It was July 30th, 2002, the year after 9/11, the year after someone on the streets of New York told Springsteen "we need you now."  I had driven to Oshkosh, WI to visit some friends, when I remembered that Springsteen's disc was scheduled to come out that day.  I drove downtown to The Exclusive Company, but had to park a few blocks back.  At the time, there wasn't much going on downtown, but when I got out of the car, I could hear this music coming from up the block somewhere.  The closer I got to Exclusive, the more it began to dawn on me, they had set up a giant set of speakers in their upstairs windows, and were blasting the new album out into the streets....
