Day Three Hundred Forty

Well, I didn't get around to the recording today. On the plus side, however, I DID teach a guitar lesson. A co-worker's grandson had expressed an interest in guitar, and said co-worker came to me because they knew I played. He might be a bit young to take lessons, but I'll definitely give the teaching thing a shot again, because the prospect of introducing in someone a love of music while further cementing my own knowledge is too tempting to pass up. Besides, I found some really cool resources online for teaching guitar to kids. At the very least there's another lesson set up for next week, so we shall see where this goes.

I found some other cool stuff online today too, including a very involved guitar chord/scale generator. It looks like it'll be a nice way to re-familiarize myself with the naming process for all of the odd chords that we've been using in the songwriting process for the band. It's already helping me out with intervallic relationships and chord structure.

Never did get in touch with B. tonight, but considering I open tomorrow and have Thursday off, I expect that will happen on one of those two days. Still expecting that Thursday will be the day I lock out the world, at least for the lion's share of the day.

Also, having discovered the chord generator, I was able to re-examine (and subsequently re-name) some of the progressions we've been working on. And as a side note, the progression I've been working with the last few days strikes me today more as a verse than a chorus.

Day One Hundred Forty Two

So, I haven't been sleeping much lately, and I've been staying up late. listening to music, doing a bit of playing, and watching old episodes of Behind The Music on the internet. It's funny, you know, because I never met the rest of my "band," I've become the critic. It's all right, don't get me wrong, but for a decade now I've always hoped that I'd find a way to release something. It'll happen, I know it will, but it's continually happened slower than I expected it to. I've gotten close to getting something released, as I've documented before here before, but with the winter coming and the cold closing in, I'm facing another chance to make something musical of the winter. I'm going to start by finishing up the old things that have gotten pushed to the sides in the last few months. With the buildup of everything since the summer, it should be easier. Even if all I do is spend the winter writing lyrics, trying to g...

DayOne Hundred Sixty Nine (Year Eight)

Today was another good day.  I spent all of it with my brother, which I needed a lot, even though I just saw him over Christmas. Tonight we finally got around to some music discussion.  He took a look at my list of goals for the year, and sees it as a really good set of steps to get me where I'd like to be from where I am.  I picked his brain about a few of the nagging questions I still had as I get started, and he was able to put my mind at ease. Having a chance to sit and chat with him is always good for my musical soul, because he constantly drives me to be a better, more well rounded player, and I'm pretty sure that I can never thank him enough for all of the advice, support, and encouragement he offers every time we chat.

Day Three

Short one today. I've got a bunch of the DVDs that Guitar World has put out. Waded through those to see what I had, worked off of the lead guitar one. Just basic scales , but still a light place to begin. It was nice to just start loosening up my fingers again. Off from work tomorrow, so hopefully I'll get a lot of playing done. Said I'd mention the other project I'm hoping to finish this year. Back when I was living in WI, I started a hard rock band with a friend of mine. She was heavily influenced by Evanescence, and so, with her as vocalist, we started writing songs. We had written and demoed almost a full album's worth of music by the time I moved to IA, and had even purchased a P.A. in preparation for eventual gigs. We never did find a permanent drummer or bassist, so our demos sound very rough (and not nearly loud enough). I'd like to finish those songs, and make an EP of the 4 or 5 strongest, just as a way to put a cap on that project. More tom...
