Day Two Hundred Fifty Four (Year Six)

I actually got into the studio a bit today, and it felt like a miracle after a few days where I felt like I was hardly in there at all.

More than that, I sat down with the intention of actually getting in some practice time, and I did so, albeit in a somewhat limited fashion.  I worked through a few examples from some old lessons in back issues of Guitar Techniques.  Not the stuff that I had on my list of things to work on, of course, but more-so things that caught my eye as I was sorting through one of the piles of magazines that was sitting in the studio.

Either way, it was a good push forward that helped me to see a bit more of the path ahead for the next few weeks.  Somehow the next three weeks feel like they will be crucial to my progress for the rest of the year.  That may seem like an odd statement, but the next three weeks lead up through our vacation.  Once that's over, attention will need to be a bit more singularly focused on a potential move and all that goes along with that.  So yes, getting things to a really good place in the next three weeks feels crucial for being able to both continue during the run-up to a move, and then to pick up things easily after we get settled wherever the new place is.

I've got Tuesday off this week, and I'm really hoping to spend a good chunk of it in the studio.

Day One Hundred Forty Two

So, I haven't been sleeping much lately, and I've been staying up late. listening to music, doing a bit of playing, and watching old episodes of Behind The Music on the internet. It's funny, you know, because I never met the rest of my "band," I've become the critic. It's all right, don't get me wrong, but for a decade now I've always hoped that I'd find a way to release something. It'll happen, I know it will, but it's continually happened slower than I expected it to. I've gotten close to getting something released, as I've documented before here before, but with the winter coming and the cold closing in, I'm facing another chance to make something musical of the winter. I'm going to start by finishing up the old things that have gotten pushed to the sides in the last few months. With the buildup of everything since the summer, it should be easier. Even if all I do is spend the winter writing lyrics, trying to g...

DayOne Hundred Sixty Nine (Year Eight)

Today was another good day.  I spent all of it with my brother, which I needed a lot, even though I just saw him over Christmas. Tonight we finally got around to some music discussion.  He took a look at my list of goals for the year, and sees it as a really good set of steps to get me where I'd like to be from where I am.  I picked his brain about a few of the nagging questions I still had as I get started, and he was able to put my mind at ease. Having a chance to sit and chat with him is always good for my musical soul, because he constantly drives me to be a better, more well rounded player, and I'm pretty sure that I can never thank him enough for all of the advice, support, and encouragement he offers every time we chat.

Day Three

Short one today. I've got a bunch of the DVDs that Guitar World has put out. Waded through those to see what I had, worked off of the lead guitar one. Just basic scales , but still a light place to begin. It was nice to just start loosening up my fingers again. Off from work tomorrow, so hopefully I'll get a lot of playing done. Said I'd mention the other project I'm hoping to finish this year. Back when I was living in WI, I started a hard rock band with a friend of mine. She was heavily influenced by Evanescence, and so, with her as vocalist, we started writing songs. We had written and demoed almost a full album's worth of music by the time I moved to IA, and had even purchased a P.A. in preparation for eventual gigs. We never did find a permanent drummer or bassist, so our demos sound very rough (and not nearly loud enough). I'd like to finish those songs, and make an EP of the 4 or 5 strongest, just as a way to put a cap on that project. More tom...
