Day Thirty Four (Year Five)

Tonight was awesome.  In truth, tonight's goings on were what I had hoped for out of last night, only to have last night come up short.  Anyway, I:

1) Got a bit more listening crossed off of the list today.  Slowly but surely I am making my way through all of the new purchases from our Wisconsin trip.  I'm cautiously optimistic at this point that I might get through everything by the end of the weekend.

2) Learned "Stand By Me" on the ukulele tonight.  Not only is that a classic song, but it's a fairly simple one to rip through, and it's a whole lot of fun to play.

3) Things started to get better when it comes to the mess that has been the studio for the last week or so.  I don't have all of the posters and artwork hung up yet, but I scouted places for most of it.  I also got a lot of the resources and books that have been lying out in the open put back into the closet, which frees up quite a bit of floor space.  I haven't moved the bookshelf in yet, but that will happen soon enough.

4) For the last few days, I've had a whole lot of EP-related thoughts running through my head.  I decided on the way home from work that tonight was the night to get all of those thoughts out and down on paper, just in case there was some clarity to be found in that regard.  What I ended up with was a series of EPs (two of them, to be exact), and a few extra tracks that don't fit in with either EP right now.  I guess doing all of that writing back in the early part of the year really panned out.  There are still a few loose ends to wrap up, and a whole lot of lyrics to work on, but that project is feeling like it has some traction again, after going a whole lot of nowhere for the last few months.

Yes, all told, it was a pretty great night in the studio.

Dat Two Hundred Thirty One (Year Three)

So, apparently the new Airborne EP that came out yesterday is MP3 only!  Downloaded that as soon as I figured it out this morning, but didn't have time to sync the ipod after doing so.  Therefore, I naturally had a ton of time to listen tonight that was away from my computer. On the plus side, though, I was able to spend some of that extra time with a guitar in my hands, working on the chord progression for this month's song.  I've got an opening chord change that I really like, and the flicker of a two guitar approach, with one of the two parts capoed up the neck dancing somewhere in the back of my brain.  If all goes according to plan, it could work out really well. Also, finally over halfway in the Grohl bio.  Considering I was hardly home at all today, I feel like I got a decent chunk of that read. Tomorrow should (hopefully) be another decent day for music, with a chance to play in the evening, and enough time for a few runs through the Airborne EP....

Day Two Hundred Twenty Seven (Year Two)

So, the new Springsteen disc is amazing.  There's enough of a mixture of his upbeat rockers, his ballads, and his message songs to make this his best record since The Rising .  And speaking of that record... Buying The Boss the day it comes out always takes me back to a specific moment in life.  It was July 30th, 2002, the year after 9/11, the year after someone on the streets of New York told Springsteen "we need you now."  I had driven to Oshkosh, WI to visit some friends, when I remembered that Springsteen's disc was scheduled to come out that day.  I drove downtown to The Exclusive Company, but had to park a few blocks back.  At the time, there wasn't much going on downtown, but when I got out of the car, I could hear this music coming from up the block somewhere.  The closer I got to Exclusive, the more it began to dawn on me, they had set up a giant set of speakers in their upstairs windows, and were blasting the new album out into the streets....

Day Three

Short one today. I've got a bunch of the DVDs that Guitar World has put out. Waded through those to see what I had, worked off of the lead guitar one. Just basic scales , but still a light place to begin. It was nice to just start loosening up my fingers again. Off from work tomorrow, so hopefully I'll get a lot of playing done. Said I'd mention the other project I'm hoping to finish this year. Back when I was living in WI, I started a hard rock band with a friend of mine. She was heavily influenced by Evanescence, and so, with her as vocalist, we started writing songs. We had written and demoed almost a full album's worth of music by the time I moved to IA, and had even purchased a P.A. in preparation for eventual gigs. We never did find a permanent drummer or bassist, so our demos sound very rough (and not nearly loud enough). I'd like to finish those songs, and make an EP of the 4 or 5 strongest, just as a way to put a cap on that project. More tom...
