Day Three Hundred Eight (Year Four)

Tonight was fun.

I got about an hour in the studio tonight, and got a few different things accomplished.

1) I spent about half of my time on theory related things, going through some things, and adding a few bits of knowledge to my growing understanding of how everything ties together.  Every night it seems like at least one more thing drops into place.  What I really need right now is the one thing that has consistently evaded me the last week and a half or so: a chunk of time longer than an hour to get in there and work.  Hopefully that opportunity will present itself sometime between tomorrow and the end of the weekend.

2) I spent the second half of my time in the studio working on figuring out some songs by Counting Crows and The Decemberists.  One of the things I need to find is the tab book for The King Is Dead.  I love that record, and it would be really cool to learn all of it.  I didn't get anything added to the notebook of songs tonight, but I made some progress toward having them figured out enough to add them to the collection.  So maybe I'll finish that up tomorrow.

3) I got a few things uploaded into iTunes (and synced onto to iPod).  The new discs from Old 97's, Phillip Phillips, and the new Sturgill Simpson disc, which came in today after I special ordered it over the weekend.  I've listened to about half of it so far, and it's an incredible listen.  There are a few people that I'll likely end up sharing this one with/recommending it to.

All told, a really fun day today.

Day Three

Short one today. I've got a bunch of the DVDs that Guitar World has put out. Waded through those to see what I had, worked off of the lead guitar one. Just basic scales , but still a light place to begin. It was nice to just start loosening up my fingers again. Off from work tomorrow, so hopefully I'll get a lot of playing done. Said I'd mention the other project I'm hoping to finish this year. Back when I was living in WI, I started a hard rock band with a friend of mine. She was heavily influenced by Evanescence, and so, with her as vocalist, we started writing songs. We had written and demoed almost a full album's worth of music by the time I moved to IA, and had even purchased a P.A. in preparation for eventual gigs. We never did find a permanent drummer or bassist, so our demos sound very rough (and not nearly loud enough). I'd like to finish those songs, and make an EP of the 4 or 5 strongest, just as a way to put a cap on that project. More tom...

Day One Hundred Forty Two

So, I haven't been sleeping much lately, and I've been staying up late. listening to music, doing a bit of playing, and watching old episodes of Behind The Music on the internet. It's funny, you know, because I never met the rest of my "band," I've become the critic. It's all right, don't get me wrong, but for a decade now I've always hoped that I'd find a way to release something. It'll happen, I know it will, but it's continually happened slower than I expected it to. I've gotten close to getting something released, as I've documented before here before, but with the winter coming and the cold closing in, I'm facing another chance to make something musical of the winter. I'm going to start by finishing up the old things that have gotten pushed to the sides in the last few months. With the buildup of everything since the summer, it should be easier. Even if all I do is spend the winter writing lyrics, trying to g...

Day Ninety Three (Year Six)

Today was an interesting day. On one hand, it wasn't a day where I spent a ton of time in the studio, but on the other hand, it was a day where the time that I did spend in the studio was probably the most productive time I've had in a long time.  In short, even though I didn't spend all that much time working on the EP tonight, I feel like I got a whole lot closer to finishing it. I've been frustrated with myself lately for not finishing things a bit quicker, and struggling with the fact that, while I have been successful at finding a whole lot of kernels of songs, they haven't seemed to want to sprout into completed works.  Tonight, instead of freaking out and making myself more stressed out, I sat down and looked at a few favorite songs to see if I could sneak a peek behind the veil, if you will. The answers jumped out at me immediately.  I haven't been doing enough with the kernels.  Mostly, I haven't been facilitating the chord changes that will a...
