Day Three Hundred Thirty Four

So, I've had family in town for the last two days, and yet I still managed to accomplish a couple of band related things today, and things that will help me out in general when it comes to music.

The first thing: I've finally gotten my studio set up and organized in a way that it ought to be really productive! I went ahead and sorted through everything that was spread out in various places around the corner of the living room that doubles as my studio, filtered it all down to the most vital stuff for advancing beyond where I am as a player, and then organized it in such a way that it's all accessible at the drop of a hat. That includes all my tab, my other resources, and all of my books about the music industry/assorted musicians.

Of course, the best part of organizing everything (other than having it the way it should've been two years ago), was the chance to look through everything as I was doing it. And what did I find? Something that might just be the original tabbing out of the first few sections of the Double Drop D progression. Knowing exactly what it was I was doing (or at least an aproximation of it) will help when the time comes to split the song up into sections to see if there are actually two songs hiding in there somewhere.

There's a potential late night Skype session set for tomorrow as well. B. and I haven't chatted in a few days, and definitely haven't chatted since she picked up her mic and such. Can't wait to show her what I found! I'm hoping to be able to finish up with the odds and ends before we chat tomorrow night, but that should be easy, considering I'm done at 3:30, and she won't even be available until after 9.

Let's see, what else did I find tonight...

1) My notebook with songs that I had started to figure out last year (Alkaline Trio's "Fine," and "Be My Yoko Ono" by Barenaked Ladies were the first couple of songs I had written down). Need to start adding to that again, get back to using songs as a means to improve, as opposed to simply running scales or noodling mindlessly.

2) Another notebook that I had started, intending to put it in the lesson binder when I got that far, with all of the notes in each key, and the note/scale breakdown for those keys.

3) The tab for Clapton's version of "I'm Tore Down," which I had been working on last year, but never finished off.

4) My binder of acoustic songs that I had started in anticipation of playing live at some point. That was a really early project. Like maybe the first week of the blog.

All things I had started very early on, and then drifted away from as the year went on. And all things I need to get back to as the blog approaches the end of its first year of esxistence. I'm hoping for a lot of giant leaps forward in the next 40 days, and even more beyond that. I want to get everything (or most everything) that I dropped the ball on or missed the boat on at least identified in the run up to 365, so that I can really focus on those things in year two.

All in all, a really great day!

Day Two Hundred Six (Year Four)

Today was the first official day of the second half of my "album-in-a-month" challenge. As for today's goals, I wanted to see what I could get done in regards to track order, and get at least a little bit of a start on the lyric writing process. I spent more time working on the track order question than I did on the lyrics today, but as a result of that, I ended up with something that I think will work in terms of order. I did sit with the notebook for a few minutes at the very end of the day, and got a solid starting line of lyric and some other ideas that I hope will be jumping off points for lyrics. What I'm thinking I might do, however, is switch my focus from the lyric writing part of the process directly to the recording part of the process.  That way, if I can get the music recorded and burned onto a CD, I can take the music with me in the car, and listen and try to see what images and thoughts the music brings up.  It's a tactic that has worked for...

Day Two Hundred Ninety Nine (Year Four)

Tonight was one of those nights where absolutely nothing went right, but somehow, some way, I managed to get into the studio for a little bit, and make what felt like good progress, all things considered. I went back through the second half of last night's chapter in The Guitarist's Guide To Scales Over Chords , just to make sure that I had a decent grasp of everything that was covered, and then made the move to the next chapter. After the theory-heavy chapter I had just gotten through, it was a great relief to have the next one be more music (playing) centered.  It was all about putting the scale examples they cited in the early chapters to use in a musical context. I've seen a great number of books try to do this in a successful manner, and end up failing spectacularly, but so far I'm liking what this book is putting forward.  They give you "starter" examples, that don't necessarily make the best use of note choices, etc. and then present you with an...

Day Two Hundred Ninety Two (Year Five)

Today was the last seminary village cookout of the year. While we were all sitting around the picnic tables eating dinner, I got a chance to talk with a few of the Mrs.'s classmates about guitar related stuff. As it turns out, more than one of them wants to be more proficient on guitar. I'm not saying that this will lead to more teaching opportunities, but I told one of them that I would throw a folder together for them. Essentially, anytime I get a chance to talk shop is a great chance for me to reinforce some of the things I have been focusing on. If nothing else, it gets me thinking ahead to tomorrow's day off and a chance to get into the studio for a decent amount of time.
