So, tonight I went back and tried to take an objective look at what my musical goals were for the year, and translate that into some sort of progress report. With the year being 1/6 over (essentially), here were my goals, followed by notes on where I sit in regards to them:
1a) Finish writing & recording at least an EP (while holding out hope for a full record).
1b) Either FAWM (February Album Writing Month) or the RPM Challenge.
I definitely accomplished the second half of this, and am somewhere in the middle of finishing off the first half as well. I need to spruce up guitar parts, write lyrics, and record vocals by the end of the year in order to cross that one off of my list officially. Totally doable.
2) Build on my recent theory studies.
With February being taken up almost entirely with the record-in-a-month project, I didn't really build on the theory study that I was doing at the end of last year and the beginning of this year. One of my goals for March is to incorporate those goals with work on the record.
3) Take (at least a few) lessons again.
4) Look into expanding my teaching.
5) Build a set list & play live.
These three I haven't even touched yet, but they are definitely things I want to get done this year, and I will get to them at some point.
6) Finish the last bit of studio organizing.
This seems to be a constant issue, and it has gotten better since the start of the year, but still isn't where I'd like it to be. The biggest issue in this regard is the resource closet.
7) Do better with playing both acoustic and electric.
8) Focus more on genre studies (acoustic, blues, country, etc).
These two I did a great job with in January, between the Acoustic Goldmine book and the 100 Riffs video. I'm excited to get back to both of these things (hopefully starting tomorrow).
9) Finish off the lesson binder.
10) Take more time for listening.
As for these two, the resources and the records both have prominent spots in the studio right now, both goals come with a hefty time requirement, but I know that a few minutes to an hour a day can yield great results in a short time period. Honestly, I need to do better in regards to both of them, and I'd like to prioritize them as much as I can in March, if only so that I can better incorporate them into my daily routine.
Not bad for the first two months, really, especially considering how often we've been gone or busy on the weekends so far in 2014. Doing well so far, and hoping it can only get better from here.
