Day Two Hundred Two (Year Four)

The farther I get into this album-in-a-month, the more convinced I am that it's actually going to happen.  I know that's the way it's supposed to work, but still.  In my more half than whole-hearted efforts at this in the past, I've never had this much success.  Guess that's where the other half comes in, right?

Today had been set up as the biggest "put up or shut up" day in a little over a week, and I'm really happy with the results.  Here's what I got done:

1) I got the music written for two more songs tonight!  That takes me to 12 for the month (so far).  The goal of 14 (or, at least, the music for 14) is in sight.  The way things have been going, it's looking like I'll hit my goal of having the music written by the middle of the month.  As for lyric writing and recording, well, I'll have a whole two weeks to get all of that sorted out.

2) I got a little bit closer to having everything in the studio the way that I want it.  After getting the card table out of there, I discovered that the big, clunky DVD player I'd been using for lesson videos and such was too big to fit into my new space.  Solved that problem for less than $30 with a small DVD player that fits the space just perfectly.  Got it set up and tested out tonight.

3) Picked up the new Band of Horses record, Acoustic At The Ryman today in the process of my running.  I also snagged a couple of records that have been on my radar for a while now.  They are Unmap and Repave.  The first two records by a band called Volcano Choir that includes Justin Vernon from Bon Iver, as well as band members from a Milwaukee, WI band called Collections of Colonies of Bees.

I know both records will be home stereo & headphones sort of listens, so I haven't cracked them open yet.  I'm waiting for a chunk of available time that will likely arrive when the music for my next two songs is written, thus giving me the 14 that the challenge demands.  Hopefully one tomorrow and one on Thursday will finish it out.

Dat Two Hundred Thirty One (Year Three)

So, apparently the new Airborne EP that came out yesterday is MP3 only!  Downloaded that as soon as I figured it out this morning, but didn't have time to sync the ipod after doing so.  Therefore, I naturally had a ton of time to listen tonight that was away from my computer. On the plus side, though, I was able to spend some of that extra time with a guitar in my hands, working on the chord progression for this month's song.  I've got an opening chord change that I really like, and the flicker of a two guitar approach, with one of the two parts capoed up the neck dancing somewhere in the back of my brain.  If all goes according to plan, it could work out really well. Also, finally over halfway in the Grohl bio.  Considering I was hardly home at all today, I feel like I got a decent chunk of that read. Tomorrow should (hopefully) be another decent day for music, with a chance to play in the evening, and enough time for a few runs through the Airborne EP....

Day Three

Short one today. I've got a bunch of the DVDs that Guitar World has put out. Waded through those to see what I had, worked off of the lead guitar one. Just basic scales , but still a light place to begin. It was nice to just start loosening up my fingers again. Off from work tomorrow, so hopefully I'll get a lot of playing done. Said I'd mention the other project I'm hoping to finish this year. Back when I was living in WI, I started a hard rock band with a friend of mine. She was heavily influenced by Evanescence, and so, with her as vocalist, we started writing songs. We had written and demoed almost a full album's worth of music by the time I moved to IA, and had even purchased a P.A. in preparation for eventual gigs. We never did find a permanent drummer or bassist, so our demos sound very rough (and not nearly loud enough). I'd like to finish those songs, and make an EP of the 4 or 5 strongest, just as a way to put a cap on that project. More tom...

Day Two Hundred Twenty Seven (Year Two)

So, the new Springsteen disc is amazing.  There's enough of a mixture of his upbeat rockers, his ballads, and his message songs to make this his best record since The Rising .  And speaking of that record... Buying The Boss the day it comes out always takes me back to a specific moment in life.  It was July 30th, 2002, the year after 9/11, the year after someone on the streets of New York told Springsteen "we need you now."  I had driven to Oshkosh, WI to visit some friends, when I remembered that Springsteen's disc was scheduled to come out that day.  I drove downtown to The Exclusive Company, but had to park a few blocks back.  At the time, there wasn't much going on downtown, but when I got out of the car, I could hear this music coming from up the block somewhere.  The closer I got to Exclusive, the more it began to dawn on me, they had set up a giant set of speakers in their upstairs windows, and were blasting the new album out into the streets....
