Day Forty Eight (Year Two)

So, yesterday's post was really short.

First off, I forgot to mention something yesterday:  I had a short conversation with J. before I ran off to work.  We chatted a bit about track order and song selection, and he told me that by worrying about the running order at this point, I was in danger of stifling my creativity.  That both he and B. that have told me to stop worrying about it, and I think they're right.  All we can do is write the best group of songs we possibly can, and see what happens from there.  Besides, as long as we keep writing, we ought to have a lot of stuff to pick from.

With that in mind, I kept working tonight on the tune I started in the last couple of days.  I got the chorus figured out tonight, so that's awesome.  I'm still undecided on whether or not the verses will be right for the band, but I know for sure that the chorus progression fits.  I'll keep tinkering with it until I get it right.

Importing a couple of things I've picked up recently.  Both Half Price Books finds.  Son Volt's 3rd record, Wide Swing Tremolo, and a Katie Costello record called Lamplight.  I'd never heard of Katie Costello before, but the artwork looked interesting, so I picked it up.  There's a really cool tune on there called "Cassette Tape" that I've been hung up on.  I'll listen to the rest of it soon.

As for the Son Volt, I've finally decided that I need to pick up all of their stuff.  I've got everything by Uncle Tupelo, and everything by Wilco (can't wait for Sept. 27th, and the release of The Whole Love.  You can guarantee that's all I'll be listening to in the week before the show), so I figure I ought to check out the things Jay has done post Tupelo.  Somehow that feels like filling in missing pieces, even though I know that Son Volt and Wilco have diverged greatly since they started.  Almost switched places, if you will, considering that after Trace, Son Volt was considered to have the bigger upside.

I need to do some practicing before bed tonight.  At least I can take some solace in knowing that Stu hasn't gotten to the 4 hour mark/day yet either.

Day Three

Short one today. I've got a bunch of the DVDs that Guitar World has put out. Waded through those to see what I had, worked off of the lead guitar one. Just basic scales , but still a light place to begin. It was nice to just start loosening up my fingers again. Off from work tomorrow, so hopefully I'll get a lot of playing done. Said I'd mention the other project I'm hoping to finish this year. Back when I was living in WI, I started a hard rock band with a friend of mine. She was heavily influenced by Evanescence, and so, with her as vocalist, we started writing songs. We had written and demoed almost a full album's worth of music by the time I moved to IA, and had even purchased a P.A. in preparation for eventual gigs. We never did find a permanent drummer or bassist, so our demos sound very rough (and not nearly loud enough). I'd like to finish those songs, and make an EP of the 4 or 5 strongest, just as a way to put a cap on that project. More tom...

Day Three Hundred Fifty Seven (Year Seven)

Today was okay.  It ended up being quieter than I wanted it to be, but I got in a few things. 1.  I got the music from the car hauled in and sorted out in advance of my road trip to Dubuque for a little longer than a day.  I'm taking the Radiohead reissue with me for that, since I haven't gotten a chance to sit down with it yet. 2.  I'm also taking an empty notebook along with me, in the hopes that I might start to get some lyric ideas down on paper while I'm gone.  I watched some cool videos early this morning about the idea of writing all of the music before writing lyrics, and the way things are going that is looking like what's going on with me. 3.  I wish there had been more playing today, but I'm still feeling good about where things are sitting.  This next week needs to include a lot of writing.

Day Three Hundred Nine (Year Seven)

Well, it happened.  We came, we saw, and we (sort of) conquered.  I'm not sure how great we played all the way through, but there were definite moments that went really well, and all things considered (from my side anyway), it was an absolute blast and I hope we get to play again for something that's not church related. The set list, as it was, went like this: 1.  I'll Fly Away 2.  From This Valley 3.  Crazy 4.  My Church 5.  Jolene 6.  Long December 7.  You & I 8.  Can't Help Falling In Love 9.  Hey Jude It was an interestingly eclectic group of songs, with more bluegrass and country than I would have expected. It definitely took us a little while to get our feet under us, and on some level I felt like we were just getting warmed up by the time "Hey Jude" ended, but it was a start, and I'll take that any day.
